Nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress is more than just a repository of knowledge—it is a masterpiece of American architecture and history. Established in 1800, it is the largest library in the world, housing millions of books, manuscripts, and photographs. The Thomas Jefferson Building, where many photography sessions take place, is an architectural gem, completed in 1897 and inspired by the grand palaces of Europe.
With its elaborate Beaux-Arts style, the Library of Congress offers a breathtaking backdrop for photography. The soaring Great Hall, adorned with marble columns, gilded ceilings, and intricate mosaics, exudes elegance and romance. The grand staircases, adorned with sculptures, provide a dramatic setting, while the arched windows and skylights allow for soft, natural lighting—ideal for capturing intimate moments. Whether framed by the ornate doorways or posed beneath the stunning dome, every shot taken in this historic space feels timeless, making it a dream location for engagement photography.

The Library of Congress is free to visit, but a timed entry ticket is required and reservations can conveniently be made online in advanced. The Library of Congress is open 9:00 am – 5:00pm EST Tuesday through Saturday. If you’ve never visited before, some useful information can be found on their “Know Before You Go” page. There is very limited street parking near by, so I recommend going early or planning to walk/Uber the rest of the way there.
The Library of Congress is one of the few places in Washington DC that does not require a photography permit. This makes it a wildly popular spot for photography sessions of all types, and therefore frequently crowded. Fear not though – the crowds are no deterrent to my desire to work there, and it’s entirely possible to make your session still feel intimate. Don’t just believe what I’m telling you, look at this gallery as evidence that we can make the space look large and empty, like you’ve rented out the entire building for yourselves.

Without further ado – enjoy this intimately romantic engagement session at the Library of Congress.
