National Gallery of Art Engagement Photos in the Multiverse installation

If you want unique, artistic, and visually striking images, consider doing National Gallery of Art engagement photos.

If you want unique, artistic, and visually striking images, consider doing a National Gallery of Art photoshoot. I’m Jalisa, a DC wedding photographer, this is one of my absolute favorite locations to work at. It’s intimate, it’s romantic, it’s elegant, and it’s timeless. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your photo session at this iconic location.

National Gallery of Art Information

Whether you’re a DMV native, or a tourist coming from across the country to explore the Nation’s Capital, the National Gallery of Art is recognized as a well loved art museum that’s is a popular destination for visitors and photographers alike. They are open seven days a week from 10:00am – 5:00pm with the only closures being on December 25 and January 1.

Getting There

The National Gallery of art is located in Washington, DC, at the intersections of Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. It is composed of two buildings (East and West buildings) and an outdoor Sculpture Garden. As with most buildings near the heart of DC, there is not a lot of street parking or garages nearby, so I highly recommend taking public transportation if possible. The nearest Metro station is Archives-Navy Memorial Penn Quarter, which is just a short 6-minute walk to the West Building. Before arriving, I also recommend checking the museum’s website to confirm building or entrance closures.

Building Access and Restrictions

All visitors are required to pass through a general security checkpoint upon entering the building. Expect to pass through a metal detector and have bags inspected. Oversized bags must be checked in, but for visitor convenience, free coat/bag checks are located at every entrance. The museum also has a strict “no live plants/florals” policy as they do have live plants within the museum, so unfortunately that gorgeous bouquet you’re dreaming of bringing will not be allowed past security.

Check out more information here for a list of frequently asked questions and additional information.

Now that we’ve covered the location basics, let’s talk about details for a National Gallery of Art photoshoot.

Photography Policy at the National Gallery of Art

National Gallery of Art Photography Permit

A photography permit is not required for sessions at the National Gallery of Art photoshoot!! However, it’s best to respect the museum and other visitors by obeying all policies, not blocking walkways, and not disrupting the art. This is a well loved photography location, and one of the few in DC that does not require a photography permit – let’s keep it that way!

Photography Restrictions

According to the National Gallery of Art website, monopods, tripods, and selfies sticks are not permitted indoors, but small tripods may be used outside and in the Sculpture Garden. Drones and unmanned aerial devices and strictly prohibited.

Tips for Photos at the National Gallery of Art

Timing is Everything

To avoid the crowds and make the most of natural lighting, schedule your session for early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These times offer softer, more flattering light and a more serene atmosphere. Remember that the Gallery’s hours may vary, so plan accordingly to make the most of your time. Weekends and holidays, especially in the summer months, are very busy. If possible, aim for a weekday in late fall or spring for the smallest crowds. Regardless, it’s best to plan for a crowd to be present.

And it’s okay to be nervous if there is a crowd while you’re being photographed – trust me, everyone doing photos in a public location like this is nervous. However, you can trust that you’re in good hands with me. We will navigate the gallery together, seek out pockets or privacy, and embrace intimacy and solitude in a crowd that will give you the dreamy photos of your dreams.

Dressing for the Scene

The National Gallery of Art offers a variety of settings, from classical and elegant, to colorful and contemporary. If you’re drawn to the classical, European style artwork featured in the West Building (pictured below), I recommend neutral colored clothing with long and sleek lines. This compliments the art, architecture, and timeless character of the West Building.

On the other hand, the East Building features modern, colorful art on large, plain walls. If you prefer to wear colorful and vibrant colors, this may be the building well suited for your session here!

Regardless, comfortable and stylish shoes are a must. There is a lot of ground to cover within both buildings, and my engagement sessions always include movement and frequent walking.

Location Options at the National Gallery of Art

As we just discussed above, there are a few distinctly different locations in the National Gallery of Art. Let’s break them down below.

West Building

Known for its classical architecture and large, open spaces filled with natural light, the West Building offers grand staircases, sculptures, and a rotunda that can serve as stunning backdrops. Personally, this is my favorite part of the museum to photograph in. I adore the classical paintings, ornate architecture, grand staircase, and soft lighting. The West Building also features rotundas blooming with greenery.

East Building

However, if you prefer a more modern aesthetic, the East Building is perfect. It is contemporary in design and showcases high ceilings, and striking angles, and captivating pops of color. I personally find the lighting here more harsh, but it can create a really wonderful juxtaposition.

Sculpture Garden

Weather permitting, don’t forget to step outside to the Sculpture Garden – full of meticulously maintained landscaping, a bubbling fountain, and outdoor sculptures. It’s an excellent place for some varied and dynamic photos.

Multiverse Art Installation

And lastly, my favorite “hidden gem” of the National Gallery of Art. Regardless of which building we spend time in, I always bring my engagement couples to this underground tunnel to take striking images like this!
